NBN Phone with BYO Router

Hello all,

Having trouble with setting up my devices for a FTTP NBN connection.

I have received the given Telstra TG797 modem/router though I wish not to use this as my main router due to it's limited capabilities. The problem is that it is needed to utilise the phone services through the NBN package (L Bundle) I am on.

Currently I am using a D-Link 2890AL as my main router (connected directly to the NTTD), with a self-managhed gigabit switch connected to this to manage my houses internal ethernet ports. Due to the router having to sit in the garage, wifi signal was poor and I have installed a D-Link DAP-1650 set in range extend mode (which connects to the router via ethernet and broadcasts a WiFi signal from it self there onwards).

I have been told the TG797 can be connected to the network and utilised still for the phone services as long as it has a connection to the internet. Therefore I have left it in it's default settings and have it connected to my DAP-1650 (more conveniant location) via ethernet utilising the TG797's WAN port.

The problem is I get a dial tone and am able to make phone calls but am unable to receive calls.

Has anyone had any success in getting their phone services to work whils not using the TG797 as the main router?

If so, what settings are required to make this work?

Also currently I am having a replacement TG797 sent out as currently my configuration works SOMETIMES but receiving calls are hit and miss.

Thanks for the advice/help,

Jim
