Re: Slow FTTN Harrington park NSW

It looks like the VDSL link is whats limiting your speed. (Maximum 13 Mb/s down 4,46 Mb/s up) This could be because you are a over i Km from the node or poor quality cable. It could also be due to phones or other devices plugged into spare phone sockets or gateway not plugged directly into phone socket. (Remove ADSL filter/splitter).

It is not paying for the speed boost if you can't locate and fix the cause of the low VDSL link speed.

How do I find out my distance from the node?

Look for nearest node. It is a square green box about the size of a PMG letterbox.

It is worth noting though that depending on how the cable was laid out initially the nearest might not always be where you are and or the cable length can be quite a bit higher than the physical distance because it can be via indirect paths at times.

I tend to agree and my own thread is an evidence of that.

In saying that if you read the Whirlpool forums, it seems Telstra and Optus are the major culprits. Small nimble RSP's like SkyMesh or Aussie Broadband seem to be recieving a lot more positive reviews.

I think the major reason is that even if it is a technical issue, these service providers have been able to provide a far better customer service.

This was the same when Internode first came into the ADSL market. Their tech support and customer service was second to none.

I have also just upgrade from fast cable service with telstra to the new nbn offering with Telstra. The only reason I did this was they had what sounded like a good deal with foxtel thrown in. I'm now regreting it something BAD. My speeds are worse than ADSL2+. I was seeing a consistant 35mbps/1mbps on cable even at peak periods. Now getting 5mbps/4mbps on nbn what a joke.

It is likely that the speed will balance itself out after a couple months unless there is a technical issue also at play but even then the standard speed for nbn is 25/5 instead of the 30/1 for cable, so your download speed will still be slower on the download speed.

Hi DrQ,

I did anticipate a slight drop in speed from 35 to 25 and this is why I purchased the speed boost to 100mb. Trying to get through to Telstra tech support to explain this one.

What type of nbn is it? Do you happen to know?

Cool, so there should be no technical limitation at play since you were getting ~35Mbps on the same cable before the transition. Yeah, sounds like it is just a CVC issue, tech support should be able to give you some idea of when they have upgrades in place for the area.

Seems as though the new modem is playing up. Telstra sending out a new one this week. Also found out the speed boast to 100mb wasn't added. good times.

Fingers crossed this can all be sorted out this week.

This is the point ! telstra will switch you over to the nbn on the same plan you are on in my case HFC with 115.43 mbps with speed boost at $88's, a month it was $109.00 a month, telstra gave me a discount because i said i was going to cancel my account with telstra. What will happen to my speed if i was to switch to nbn will i be put on the 100/40 plan ? who knows, or will they put me on 25/5 and still be paying for the Fast 115.43mbps at $88. Ether way i will be paying $88 for a greatly reduced speed. It is a joke but nobody is laughing. Trying to get an answer out of telstra is like getting blood out of a stone.

No answers from telstra.

It's also worth noting that the nearest node may not be the one you are connected to. The node that I am conencted to is over twice as far away as the nearest. It depends how your area was wired up originally.  You can check out the areas at http://nationalmap.gov.au then Add Data->National Datasets->Communications->Broadband Map

This will show you the boundary of your area. You can then look for a Node in your area and that will be the most likely one you are connected to.

If you don't transfer to NBN you want even have a basic phone service as all areas that have access to NBN except satellite NBN have there phone service supplied via NBN.

When nbn is available in your area you still have 18 months to keep your reliable cable service and after that you have no choice. You can either move to nbn crap or you can cancel your service. That is the only choice you have. Disgusting isn't it.

Update! I've fixed an issue with a faulty cable going to the gateway. Now the speed has incressed but seems to be limited almost exactly to the basic plan 25/5 see below:

It looks very much as if you are on the 25/5 plan. Speed Boost is not active. When I signed up, it took some 5 or so days after I had the 25/5 plan before they applied the 100/40 boost. This should be resolved in time: if not, complain loudly.
