In most case it will be faster than ADSL, however the issue is that in many areas they aren't providing enough 'backhaul' to the local nodes on FTTN connections...
The idea is that with having fibre run to the node that they can up and down the supply to the node on demand... but they are starting off with barely any supply and working, rather than starting high and coming down...
In many areas the way it is, it is like having a 10 lane highway, but only having a single lane open to traffic...
Once it balances out it should be much faster... but it is taking its time...
