As with all wireless technology the connection will be based on the consistency of the wireless signal which is the difference to ADSL. Depending on the distance between the broadcast tower and your NBN receiver there may be things in between which may be causing the delay in ping.
Generally tech support would only be able to investigate if the connection is completely dropping but if you can make a list of when the lag is happening and speed tests at the time then the tech team will be able to lodge an investigation on the network.
