Is your laptop running Windows or Mac OS? Have you tried going through the troubleshooting steps outlined in the user guide?
As you mentioned that you have been using Access Mode with the laptop, I thought this tip may be worth noting:
If the machine cannot be detected while you are setting up the network communication, the machine may be in access point mode. In this case, finish the access point mode and enable the wireless LAN, then try to redetect the machine.
