TG797n in Bridge mode

I have a Telstra NBN (FTTH) service with a TG797n router which is not what I told when I signed up but nevertheless has worked well until about a week ago when Telstra turned on Telstra Air and FON.  I should also say I have my own Billion router which supports my fairly extensive home network (including an Asterix PABX and 10 SIP phones).  When I signed up I was assured that I could continue to use my own router and that Telstra would provide the SIP details for the VoIP phone.  However this was not so and I had no option but to use telstra's router to get the telephony which I immediately convert back to IP in my Linksys ATA.  Cumbersome I thought and noisy at first but truth is it settled down very quickly and has worked well for several months.  I also thought (from reading 'Crowd Support postings) that I would have to put the Telstra router into Bridge mode.  However I could not find any option to do this so I simply connected my router to one of the TG 797n LAN ports and that worked fine also.  So I left it alone as I don't believe in fixing something which is not broken.  However since the Telstra Air and FON was turned on I now have to reboot my Billion router twice a day before the TG797n will give it an IP address and internet access.

I've just spent an hour talking to Telstra NBN support and the and the advice I was finally given was that Telstra residental NBN is a very plain service.  It has to use their router with no option to put it in bridge mode and no option to turn off Telstra Air and FON (I still don't understand why this has caused the problem but it has).  If I was not satisfied with this I could try and get a 'business service' (I know I can't even if I wanted it because I don't have an ABN) or alternatively I should seek another service provider.

Surely this can't be true as there are numerous postings on crowd support about putting the TG797n into bridge mode.  What am I doing wrond as my service was working ok and I don't want all the hassle of picking another service provider and moving.
