Telstra DNS server unresponsive

Hi

I was connected via Telstra FTTN last Tuesday with a new TG799vac Gateway Max modem. Setup went relatively smoothly and it performed satisfactorily from Tuesday through Friday, albeit with congestion between 6pm-12am, but as of Saturday morning I started having severe DNS issues.

Multiple devices are showing the same connectivity issues (2x PCs via ethernet; 2x phones via wifi; Telstra TV via wifi). Telstra's custom firmware doesn't allow alteration of the DNS from default Telstra values (WA DNS servers), and seems to ignore custom DNS server IPs set on the device specific NICs.

The result is that I have constant sync but a highly unreliable connection. Refer the following images trying to connect to news.com.au and Crowd Support just now:

Eventually got through by just refreshing the page a number of times, but I've now been trying for over 5 minutes to post this message due to continual timeout errors.

I have factory reset the modem with no improvement.

I called Telstra NBN support yesterday and their suggestion was to ask Crowd Support (...) which I find entirely unsatisfactory, but given the difficulty of getting through L1 support to someone who may actually be able to resolve a DNS server issue, that's what I find myself doing.

There are some other users complaining of similar issues on Whirlpool forums but it's not a widespread outcry, so I suspect that it's something that is only impacting a limited subset of users.  Refer the following posts:
