Have you tried leaving the Telstra Gateway in its' native setup (ie Modem and Router functions on), and having the Airport Extreme operate in DHCP mode?
I run a similar setup at home (albeit without the Airport/Gateway, I have netgear modem and seperate router), and it works fine.
It means you will have 2 wireless access points by the Airport should pick out a clear band by itself anyway.
