Re: DNS server cannot be found

Hi again Steph

Today I tried to ping the Testra residential DNS servers at 61.9.133.193 and 61.9.134.49. Both servers timed out several times (with 3 out of 4 packets being lost each time) and finally when connected after several attempts, took  32ms to return the ping. Very poor.

In contrast when I pinged the Telstra business DNS servers at 139.130.4.4 and 203.50.2.71 connection was successfully made with 4 out of 4 packets on several occasions each taking only 8ms. ie., basically no delay.

I thought terrific, I'll just reset the DNS severs on my TG797n Telstra gateway to the business servers.  Imagine my anoyance when I found that Telstra has locked my unit on the residential servers meaning I cannot change them!!! We used to be able to do this.

There are other DNS publicaaly availableservers out there, for example, Google on 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.8.4 and "Open DNS" on 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 that also pinged successfully on the fisrt attempts today and took 8-10ms to respond.

Why are the Telstra residential servers so problematic and how unfair of Telstra to prevent us changing them to an alternative that actually works better. If you are going to lock them up on us then you must guarantee us a better service.

Regards John
